Balancing Act

Irene adjusts her sequined leotard. She rolls her head, shakes her arms, and makes hopping steps to warm up. “You’ll do great, Sweetie. Just hold your core.” Walter in his own sequined costume glistens from his performance on the trapeze. He is all muscle, hair slicked back, with traces of rosin still dusting his wrists. He squeezes her shoulder. Irene nods, takes a deep breath and stands tall. As she moves toward the main tent, she catches a glimpse of her friend, Mae, removing her clown makeup under the heat of a lighted mirror. Irene walks to the high wire ring. She rests a hand on her belly. “This is it, little one.” She puts on her performance smile and steps into the spotlight. With lifted arms she turns slowly to greet the circle of cheering fans — one last time.
