Two sandhill cranes graced my yard
Pranced their annual gift, unruffled
Knees high with each graceful step
Beaks uplifted in stately posture
Were they parading their beauty for me?
No, mating season trek
The NaPoWriMo prompt today was to write in the poetic form of sijo. I used poetic license to play around with the syllables a bit.

How wonderful to have them visit! Beautiful image, and I like your twist of interpreting their dance.

Thanks, Jazz. They were so beautiful this morning. I’m soon we’ll hear their loud trumpeting in the park across the street. Hope you are well.

How wonderful that you have them so close by. They have returned to our province also! Your words describe their movements so well. It’s as if I’m there watching them.

Thank you so much, Heather. I was trying to capture that lovely movement. I just looked up from my “writing window” and there they were. I ran to the another window, then another to watch them stroll into the park across the street. It was a morning blessing from the universe.

Lucky you to have sandhill cranes visiting your yard! I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.

I read that they live in spotted areas of the US, but mostly the Midwest plains. I just discovered them last year because they were making such a loud ruckus across the street I had to investigate. My neighbor told me what they were and that is normal behavior during mating season. They are quite lovely and I felt blessed this morning.

They do visit nearby Sauvie Island, but I’ve never made the trek to see them. Some day! I’ve been trying to stay close to home until I’m fully vaccinated.

That’s quite a visit, LuAnne. Do they come often, or, is it something out of the ordinary?

I have heard them in the park across the street before. They make loud trumpet sounds during mating season. But I had never seen them in my back yard. So that was a morning blessing to see the two strut right in front of my “writing window”. Hope you’re well, Don.
