Mairzy Doats

lavender laughter filled the car
rolled down windows, April 1962
singing with abandon
“Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy”
giggling, dad and daughter
both too old to be so silly
both savoring flickers of youth

Hear the silly song my dad and I loved: Mairzy Doats, Did anyone else have fun songs they sang on road trips as kids?

  1. A lovely memory! No silly songs stand out, but my Dad would always announce as we drove through a small town, “this is the dead center of the town” and I’d always ask, “how do you know?” because I was always amazed that he knew the center point of the town…it took me several years before I realized his joke…that we were passing the cemetery.

  2. I’m known to sing songs when I’m driving too…with or without the driveway. My cats love it, especially my version of “Casey would waltz with the strawberry blonde…”

Its great how the old songs come back from our childhoods. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. I did wonder about the driveway in your earlier comment. ๐Ÿ™‚ I had a cheap car while I was an itinerate teacher one year. I spent many hours on back country roads with no radio so at night I would memorize songs to sing as I drove from school to school. I think the Beatles’ White Album was my go-to playlist in my head.
