Each Moment Is Absolute

mri

Waiting for the results of his MRI
I’m on the verge of tears.
My musings last night
of whether to pack
one swimsuit or two
for our beach vacation
lingers as a surreal memory

This is the present moment.
Clinging to a vacation now canceled
instead of living this actual experience
of waiting in a hospital’s ER
leads to nothing but my own suffering

I can let myself imagine
sipping margaritas in the sun,
listening to Latin melodies,
watching surf kiss the sand,
but I must also remember
to pay attention
to the hymns of rolling gurneys
and psalms of nurses’ voices,
remember to be alive this moment
no matter what this moment is

  1. You captured so well the ever-changing reality of existence and the gift of our presence.
I was so glad to read in the comments that the condition wasn’t life threatening.

  2. Relieved your husband is home again and sorry your vacation was put on hold. You were able to use your poetry to release your feelings beautifully.

    1. Thank you, Kunal. We know what is wrong, but the treatments are complicated by a genetic condition. He is finding ways to ease the discomfort though and I am feeding him healthy food. I appreciate your concern.
