I just learned about them in the past couple of years. Last year, a group of women with whom I write and paint decided we’d make mandalas for each other and then share; we shared at the end of last year. I had so much fun doing a mandala for these women I love and my sister-in-law saw one and wanted one for her birthday which led another sister-in-law to request one which led to my daughter requesting one. So I have done about a dozen now and find them meditative to draw and easy to customize if I really know the person for whom I am creating it. (I did this lotus mandala for my daughter because she had just gotten a lotus tattoo to commemorate blossoming after coming out of a muddy relationship.) I love them, too.
