Noisy black birds
fly across the horizon
of my mind
Tiny busy ants
scurry in all directions
inside my head
Tangled kudzu vines
choke out the focus
of creative thought
Stop
Notice
Create a still space
think the thought with intent
Create another still space
before thinking another thought
This poem is about mental hooptedoodle. What is hooptedoodle you may ask? Here’s what a character in John Steinbeck’s novel, Sweet Tuesday, says about it:
“Sometimes I want a book to break loose with a bunch of hooptedoodle. . . Spin up some pretty words maybe or sing a little song with language. That’s nice. But I wish it was set aside so I don’t have to read it. I don’t want hooptedoodle to get mixed up with the story.”

Thanks, Penny. I got the idea from one of Tricycle’s Daily Dharmas.

Have you been peeking at my mind? Lol. Meditation and breathing exercises do help.

Yes they do. I’ve tried this technique in meditation for the past two days and it works wonders for clearing out that ‘monkey mind’. I hope you are well. I’ve been away for a while.

I’ve noticed, LuAnne. Hope everything is okay. I think of you often wondering how things are going.

Things are great actually. We’ve been traveling a lot lately (fun places – Mexico, FL, OR, Denver for my daughter’s MEd graduation) and when we’ve been home, the house been a revolving door of house guests I love. I have only one more planned trip this year so I hope to be more consistent with my postings.
