Two elms, siblings, grew tall together
for years side by side near my window
One became ill and died last year,
the other in grief died this spring
A carver of wood was invited to see
latent art within the dead stumps
Now two great blue herons stand tall together
looking up to the future
How beautiful. Truly a rebirth.

I was so saddened by their deaths. I am so happy to look out my writing window and see them guiding me into the future.

Yes, Emil the carver did such a lovely work with those stumps. He is very passionate with his work. Can you believe he did this all with a chain saw. Quite the artist, I’d say.

Thank you, Joan. They remind me of my own two daughters that move in different directions and I love them both. Hope you are well.

Brilliant idea! They’re gorgeous. How does one keep them looking shiny and fresh year after year?

Actually that photo was taken right after they were carved. We put a protective coat on them but they are beginning to look a little weathered now. But I like them even weathered, you know like a well worn jacket or shoes.
