What if a culture promoted respect
for all people
where there were no “others”
only sisters and brothers?
Imagine that.
What if a culture promoted a kindness
where the norm was to pause
before speaking one’s mind
and listen to differing views?
Imagine that.
What if a culture promoted peace
with active intent to move through anger
without lingering long
knowing all is impermanent?
Imagine that.
What if I lived with active respect
seeing connections instead of division?
What if I practiced loving kindness
listening , not trying to change others’ minds?
What if I started promoting peace
by noticing and then letting go of my anger?
Imagine that.

Yes, this poem was inspired by an article by an environmentalist who spoke of making many small steps toward making the world better instead of waiting for one grand gesture. Thanks for stopping by.

Beautiful! And what a lovely world it would be! If it’s ok with you I’d like to use it in my classroom to open up discussion around poetry, diversity, cultures, nonjudgemental, respect, stereotypes and bias. Thanks for sharing!

Hi LuAnne I shared your poem today and it was very well received, enjoyed and opened up a great discussion on respect, kindness for self and others, stereotypes, prejudging and prejudice. A great addition to my Communications class! Thanks for sharing!

Such a good lesson there. Be the change you want to see in the world… We need a BIGGER group!

Imagine there is no heaven, above us only sky…..of course Lennon’s song was the first thing that came to mind. But it’s true – what we do now is what matters. Show respect for life now. Thank you.

I had not thought of the connection with Lennon’s song, Imagine, which is odd because I have loved that song for such a long time. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
