“How are you doing?” I asked
of a friend I hadn’t seen in a while.
“Oh, busy, busy. Always busy.”
She asked me the same
and my answer was similar,
listing the things I’d been doing,
good things – art class, writing,
caring for a sick friend.
As I listed my activities, though
I had to wonder why I thought
being busy was badge of honor.
What about being?
After all I am a human being
am I not?
So maybe when asked “How are you doing?
I should answer with my heart.
Tell her I am grateful for the time
to sit in silence every morning,
grateful for occasions
to be empty of distractions,
to ponder and to daydream
and sometimes stare off into space
and do nothing at all.
How am I doing?
A better question might be
How am I being?
Wonderful thought LuAnne. Being first, action second, allow for accomplishing without toiling. Thank you for sharing.

So true.
I think one reason we take pride in doing so many things is that busyness gives some accomplushment. On the other hand, silence, sitting around or just smelling the roses, so to speak, is sometimes equated with idleness and lack of productivity. But, we need those silences to recharge and renew ourselves.

Love this piece. Coincidentally, I am having a “being” day today. The “to do list” was chucked for a “to be” un- list.

I think you are spot on… We need to learn to relate as human BEINGS, not human DOINGS.

What a spectacular observation on our culture that “I had to wonder why I thought
being busy was badge of honor.”! Why is “busy” filled with positive connotations and “idle” with such negative ones?
I wish I knew!
