Why Finishing a Novel Is So Difficult

You fall in love with them,
even with their funny little quirks and imperfections –
those fictional characters in novels you read,
conglomerates of real people you know
except you can really get into their psyches.

When the pages get thicker in the front than the back
you slow down,
savor the plot twists,
voice the dialog.

You cannot bear to say farewell.

So you leave your bookmark at page 523
where the characters remain like Schrödinger’s cat*
with their fates not sealed
as long as you stop
before you read on to
